THE TOWERING INFERNO (1974) Faulty wiring leads to an electrical fire in a storage room on the 81st floor of the world's tallest skyscraper (138 floors) on the eve of its ceremonial opening. The fire quickly rages out of control and begins to climb through the 'Glass Tower's' upper floors, trapping an entourage of celebrities, big-wigs and other dignitaries (either involved in the building's construction or there as distinguished guests) on the 135 floor - 'The Promenade Room.' After many casualties, including firemen, who have evacuated the lower floors, and every attempt exhausted in order to rescue those trapped in the Promenade Room fails, one last desperate plan is enacted to save their lives, but which ultimately kills many of them first. Producer: Irwin Allen. Director: John Guillermin. Cast: Steve McQueen, Paul Newman, William Holden, Faye Dunaway, Fred Astaire, Susan Blakely, Richard Chamberlain, Jennifer Jones, O.J.
